What kind of manufacturing is the best candidate for outsourcing?
It is important for clients to realize that not all products require the same level of attention and not all products are suited for international sourcing. Clients in aerProduct Manufacturersospace and other high precision, high tolerance industries prefer to have much of their product made in the US. This isn't a problem as we have access to outstanding domestic manufacturers.The big advantage of making product in China is the tremendous labor differential. The labor rate in China is between $1.25 -- $1.75 an hour as opposed to a loaded U.S. labor rate of $25-40 an hour. Obviously, the more labor required to make a product, the bigger the savings. The cost of raw materials is about the same in U.S or China.
Manufacturing that involves tooling, assembly, or other labor intensive processes often are well suited to sourcing in China. This includes parts such as electromechanical assemblies, precision investment casting, metal stamping, electrical components and medical equipment. Normally short-run jobs are not the type of work we sent offshore. As a general rule, a project must cost more than $30,000 to $50,000 a year to make global sourcing a viable.
Finally, you must consider how well the product fits into a sea container. Products must be compact or nest well so you don't wind up shipping a lot of air.
